Even the invitations, thank you notes and greeting cards received by the Barrett’s form part of this collection. In addition, virtually all correspondence with publishers, publicists, agents, friends, other authors and anyone else he came into contact - whether for personal or professional purposes, are preserved.

Poetry and journals written to his wife are included. The correspondence contained in this collection includes letters to and from his immediate family, and numerous other relatives in the Barrett and Rollman families. The scripts for most of those programs are in the collection.

During World War II he wrote and narrated a series of radio broadcasts, Speaking of Wings, on Denver radio station KLZ. Barrett was an early aviator and wrote frequently about World War I planes and pilots. He wrote and spoke frequently on the task of writing and studied his craft throughout his career. He was often selected to be the master of ceremonies at local award shows and special meetings. His correspondence in this collection provides details about his life and insights into his thoughts. He retained membership cards for every organization he joined. His life and those of his family members are well documented in this collection. He used note cards to organize his information and often relied on chronologies to fold in historical information within his storylines. His research was thorough, and he always began his work by producing a minutely detailed description of every aspect of the life of each of the characters he created before he began to write the story. The Barrett collection contains notes from his many speeches, material from literary organizations, awards, extensive research notes and reference materials. Extensive newspaper and magazine clippings document the publicity he received locally, nationally and internationally. Beginning with his early works, manuscripts for most of his articles are found here along with reviews and critiques of his writing.
